Affectionately known as the 'Zolli' by the people of Basel

Basel Zoo

Visible from a distance is the ‘Geigy Enclosure’ – a huge climbing park for the great apes: gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. The rhinos are fascinating. The sheer size of these enormous animals is impressive in itself. The zoo was founded as early as 1874, making it the oldest zoo in Switzerland. Thanks to its natural park landscape and the close proximity to the animals, Basel Zoo is unique in the zoological world and is considered one of the most beautiful zoos in the world.
