Anyone setting out on foot or by bike through Germany’s southernmost holiday and wine region in autumn will quickly understand why Goethe was moved to pen such an effusive declaration of love for the Markgräflerland. In autumn in particular, the vineyards and the nearby slopes of the Black Forest offer a dazzling display of colours, as the leaves of the vines and trees take on a rich variety of yellow and red hues.

The ÖkoRegio Tour through the Markgräflerland is particularly recommended as an autumn discovery tour. This is when the grapes that have ripened over the summer against the backdrop of the Black Forest are brought into the cellars: grapes used to produce light and elegant white wines – above all Gutedel – as well as aromatic Pinot Noir reds. And increasingly, these grapes come from organic viticulture. In recent years, the Markgräflerland has developed into a centre for environmentally friendly winegrowing: more than 30 wineries cultivate a total of around 100 hectares of vineyards in accordance with the guidelines of the Federal Association of Organic Viticulture (ECOVIN).
